Hormone Weight Loss

If someone mentioned hormone weight loss—would it make sense to you?

Perhaps you have heard about menopause and weight gain, weight gain from hypothyroidism, or nutritional deficiencies and weight gain?

All of these conditions can contribute to weight and body fat that is almost impossible to lose without a good, comprehensive program as a jump start.

For instance, menopause and weight gain is a common complaint of many women.

The reason we mention hormone weight loss is because the body´s hormones influence weight control.

We’d like you to have a little more information about just how hormones can make losing weight a challenge.

For instance, drops in estrogen and progesterone levels are thought to increase the appetite and when added to a slower metabolism during menopause, you are likely to see weight gain.

So let’s take a look at what other hormones can get in the way of weight loss.

Estrogen: When a woman´s ovaries cease to produce normal estrogen levels the body seeks it elsewhere. Since fat cells can produce estrogen, the body works harder to convert calories into fat so that estrogen increases. The problem is that fat cells don’t burn calories and this results in weight gain.

Progesterone: A decrease in the hormone progesterone results in water retention. During this time a person might experience an increase fluid retention and bloating.

Androgen: This hormone actually increases at the onset of menopause and is the reason for that “middle-age spread.” This is because under the influence of androgen the new weight lands up in the abdomen.

Testosterone: Although often thought of as a strictly male hormone, testosterone helps create lean muscle mass instead of fat. Since muscle cells burn more calories, the metabolic rate increases but as testosterone levels drop, the metabolism winds down and calories begin to add to fat deposits instead of muscle.

Thyroid: An under active thyroid, or hypothyroidism, can contribute to weight gain because the metabolic rate slows. Since fewer calories are burned they are not converted into energy and so become stored in the body as fat.

So you can see how hormones, when they are optimal levels, contribute to weight loss or optimal body weight .
