Reduced Libido and the Aging Process: What is the Correlation?

libido

As both men and women age, the likelihood of them experiencing a reduction or loss in sexual libido increases dramatically. A person suffering from this decrease in libido may be left confused, wondering how it happened and what they can do to improve their sex drive.

Unfortunately, there is no simple, cut-and-dry explanation for reduced libido. It is usually the result of a variety of complex factors, including a person’s stress levels, self-esteem, and relationship with their sexual partners. If your loss of libido is the result of one or multiple of these factors, taking the time to feel confident in yourself and your relationships with those around you can help reignite your sexual desire.

Often, these interpersonal and intrapersonal reasons are also accompanied by biological changes associated with aging. Because of this, addressing only the psychological causes of reduced libido is sometimes not enough to fully restore it.

As both women and men get older, they experience a decline in the levels of several different vital hormones. In women, this decline is usually associated with pre-, peri-, or post-menopause. Declines in testosterone, estrogen, and other vital hormones in women result in a variety of negative side effects, including decreased libido, difficulty concentrating, trouble falling and staying asleep, frequent mood swings and muscle weakness.

Men also experience a decline in vital sex hormones as they get older, particularly testosterone. Recent studies have shown that as many as 10-30 million men in the United States alone show symptoms of low testosterone levels. In addition to reducing libido, low testosterone levels can lead to chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, loss of muscle mass, and mood swings.

While these symptoms of decreased hormone levels may seem bleak, there’s, fortunately, a fairly simple, easy, and effective way to correct them and improve your libido — bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to the hormones naturally produced by the human body. By supplementing the natural decline in hormones like estrogen and testosterone with bioidentical hormones, patients can improve their libido and overall quality of life. Because these hormones are identical to those produced in the body, they safely bring patients effective hormone replacement results.

If you’re experiencing reduced libido and suspect it could be caused by a decrease in your hormone levels, we can help. Contact Age Management Center today to schedule a hormone test in Portland, Maine or Jupiter, Florida. Depending on the results of this test, our medical professionals can start you on a bioidentical hormone program that supplements the hormones you need most.
