Hormone Pellet Therapy
Bio-Identical Hormone therapy has been used for years to alleviate hormone imbalances in men and women of all ages. These hormones are made from natural sources by a compounding pharmacy and look chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. They also react differently in the body than traditional synthetic hormone combinations. Bio Identical Hormones can be used in a variety of ways such as creams, pills, injections and pellets.
Hormone pellets are tiny pellets about the size of a grain of rice that are placed just under the skin in the fatty tissue of the buttocks. This is a quick, in-office procedure with very little down time.
The effects of the pellet insertion lasts 3-4 months. These pellets will eventually dissolve and the process will be repeated to maintain even hormone levels in the blood. Dosing and re-insertion are calculated based on each individual person’s needs, symptoms, medical history and underlying lab values.
Hormone Pellets can positively affect a variety of symptoms for men and women including but not limited to:
- Decreased energy
- Low libido
- Weight issues
- Muscle development
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Vaginal dryness
- Sexual satisfaction
- Depression
- Urinary symptoms
- Menopausal symptoms

What are Bio Identical Hormones?
Bio Identical Hormones are made from natural sources by a compounding pharmacy and look chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. These hormones can be used in a variety of ways such as creams, pills, injections and pellets.
What are pellets?
Pellets are compressed hormones roughly the size of a grain of rice, that are made by a compounding pharmacy to contain specific amounts of hormones. Pellets most often contain Testosterone or Estrogen. At Age Management Center, we choose specific amounts of hormones based on each person’s needs.
Why do some patients choose pellets over hormone injections?
Hormone Pellet Therapy is an attractive way to balance hormones for many people since it requires a sub-dermal injection every 3-4 months. This is a beneficial treatment option for those who travel frequently, have a busy lifestyle or for those who have difficulty injections or pills.
What is the process like?
Hormone Pellet Insertion is a quick, easy insertion of pellets into the sub-dermal layer (area below the skin) on the upper area of the buttocks.
We first inject a numbing medication which makes the insertion process relatively pain-free (with the exception of the numbing injection, of course!).
After the area is numb, the pellets are inserted with a special tool to place them in the correct location for absorption. Once the pellet insertion is complete, we place a steri-strip (also known as surgical tape) over the injection site for the next three days.
What are the Side Effects with Pellet Insertion?
Just like with any treatment option, Hormone Pellet Therapy carries its own potential risks. We recommend patients to limit their activity levels for the first 72 hours after the procedure to allow for the insertion site and pellets to heal properly.
In rare cases, pellets can “extrude” or come back out of the insertion site. In this case, the area would be numbed again and pellets would be reinserted. You should not feel the pellets over the course of the next 3-4 months. Bruising at the injection/insertion site may also be common.
For some people, there is a fluctuation of symptoms with use of pellets. This can be because everyone metabolizes treatments at different rates. If over time there is difficulty in maintaining a baseline of hormone levels, there are many other bio identical hormone treatment options available here at Age Management Center.
