If you want to truly understand your body’s metabolic health and fitness potential, two key measurements can offer invaluable insights: Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and VO2 max. These metrics might sound like fitness jargon, but they play a crucial role in everything from managing your weight to predicting your longevity. Whether you’re trying to fine-tune your nutrition or boost your endurance, understanding REE and VO2 max could be the game-changers you didn’t know you needed. But what’s the difference, and which one is right for you?
REE and VO2 max are both important measures related to metabolism and physical fitness, but they serve different purposes and are measured under different conditions.
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)
- Definition: REE is the amount of energy, measured in calories, that the body requires at rest to maintain basic physiological functions such as breathing, circulation, and cellular production. It reflects the energy expenditure of a person who is awake but at rest and is often used interchangeably with Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR).
- Measurement: REE is typically in a controlled environment (in our case, our comfortable office), while the person is seated comfortably and is fasting.
- Purpose: Understanding REE helps in assessing daily caloric needs for weight management, nutrition planning, and metabolic health. It can inform dietary strategies for weight loss or muscle gain.
VO2 Max, on the other hand…
- …is the maximum rate at which an individual can consume oxygen during intense exercise. It is a key indicator of aerobic fitness and endurance capacity.
- Measurement: VO2 max is determined through what’s called a graded exercise test where the intensity of exercise is progressively increased. Whatever a person’s peak oxygen consumption is during this test is considered their VO2 max.
- Purpose: VO2 max is used to evaluate cardiovascular fitness and endurance performance. It provides insights into an individual’s aerobic capacity and potential athletic performance across various sports. It is also considered by longevity guru Peter Attia as one of the best predictors of longevity.
While both REE and VO2 max are related to energy metabolism, they measure different aspects of physiological function. Depending on your individual needs, one or both measurements may be instrumental in helping you achieve your health and wellness goals.
