May is Women’s Health Month—a time to step back and prioritize you. Too often, traditional healthcare overlooks the complex changes women experience as they age, leaving symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, low libido, brain fog, and emotional shifts unaddressed or dismissed. At Age Management Center, we believe women deserve better. We are committed to providing the specialized, attentive care women need to truly feel their best through every stage of life, with a particular focus on restoring hormone balance.
Understanding Hormonal Changes with Age
Hormones impact nearly every aspect of how a woman feels—physically, mentally, and emotionally. As women age, levels of estrogen and testosterone, along with dozens of other hormones, naturally decline, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms and health risks:
- Testosterone: While often associated with men, testosterone is also vital for women. It supports libido, energy, muscle tone, and mood. Women experience a steady decline in testosterone as they age, even starting years before perimenopause, and as a result, they often experience weight gain, muscle loss, a drop in vitality, strength, and sexual health.
- Estrogen: This hormone is essential not only for reproductive health but also for brain function, heart health, and bone density. After menopause, estrogen levels fall sharply, contributing to symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, cognitive decline, and an increased risk for osteoporosis. But more importantly, the latest research shows how important estrogen is for cardiovascular health as women get older, well after the hot flashes and night sweats are gone.
Recent research highlighted by The New York Times also shows that estrogen also plays an important role in protecting the brain. New evidence suggests that starting hormone therapy closer to the onset of menopause may offer cognitive benefits and could reduce the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. This reinforces the importance of timely conversations about hormone health with experienced providers.
Sexual Health: An Essential Part of Well-being
Sexual health is another key part of women’s wellness that often gets brushed aside, especially as women enter midlife and even more so in the 5th, 6th and 7th decade of their lives, when sexual health is an important part of their relationships. Suboptimal hormones can lead to vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse, decreased libido, and even urinary symptoms. These changes can impact self-esteem, relationships, and quality of life. The good news? Hormone therapy and regenerative options may safely and effectively restore comfort and confidence—helping women maintain vibrant, fulfilling lives.
Weight Management, Visceral Fat, and Bone Density
Hormonal changes also have a major impact on body composition. As estrogen levels fall, women often experience a shift in fat distribution, with more fat accumulating around the abdomen and internal organs (this later one is known as visceral fat).
Beyond a knock on one’s self confidence that comes with weight gain, visceral fat is particularly concerning because it’s linked to higher risks of heart disease, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions.
Additionally, declines in thyroid function and testosterone can contribute to weight gain and physical changes in the body. And lower estrogen and thyroid levels accelerate bone loss, leading to an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. This is why we take a holistic approach to weight loss and body composition, giving you a deeper look at all the possible causes and factors impacting your physique and wellbeing.
Addressing hormone imbalances may help support healthier weight management, reduce visceral fat, and maintain strong, healthy bones—preserving strength and mobility well into later life.
